The BC Prosecution Service contributes to the protection of society by thoroughly and fairly preparing for and conducting prosecutions. The BC Prosecution Service prosecutes offenses under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and provincial statutes in the provincial, supreme and appellate courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. The BC Prosecution Service provides legal advice to the government and the police on criminal matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal law.

As a legal assistant, you provide administrative and secretarial services to Crown Counsel. You are responsible for providing evidence management functions. The Legal Assistant receives administrative supervision from the Legal Office Manager or Deputy Director, Regional Operations and reports to Crown Counsel for daily assignments and guidance. Your ability to handle issues of a sensitive and confidential nature with tact, diplomacy and good judgment will prepare you to work effectively in a demanding environment where criminal cases are managed. You are well versed in legal terminology, an accurate and efficient information recorder and researcher and skilled in handling queries from a variety of persons, including those who may be angry or resilient. When working with limited direction, you demonstrate exceptional organizational, oral and written communication skills, and the ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with key stakeholders. Job requirements:
To be considered for this position, your application must clearly indicate how you qualify for the education and experience, as set out below:

  • Grade 12 grade or equivalent (eg GED).
  • Successful completion of a recognized legal assistant or attorney program; OR
  • A combination of training, education and administrative support / administrative experience in a law firm.
  • 1 year of recent experience (within the last 3 years) in a law firm as a legal assistant or lawyer; OR
  • Recent experience (within the last 3 years) as a legal assistant or lawyer at the BC Prosecution Service.

Preference can be given to applicants with:

  • Successful completion of a Legal Assistant Certificate or Paralegal Certificate.
  • More than 1 year experience (within the last 3 years) in a law firm as a legal assistant or lawyer.
  • Experience as a legal assistant for the BC Prosecution Service.
  • Experience as a legal assistant in the field of criminal law.

A Criminal Records Act (CRRA) review and enhanced security investigation will be required.
