Job description: We currently have an opening for an administrative assistant in Dr. Michael Welsh’s laboratory at Pappajohn Biomedical Institute, at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. The Welsh Lab is interested in understanding the biology of cystic fibrosis (CF) and developing new treatments for the deadly genetic disease. This role is an integral part of the laboratory and will be responsible for supporting the researcher with calendar, travel and correspondence. Strong candidates will have previous experience working with these responsibilities on different mediums, and a strong commitment to customer service. Coordinate the investigator’s communications, including email and phone
Maintain the investigator’s calendar, including scheduling and coordinating appointments, meetings, committee activities, conferences, and special events.
Coordinate the travel arrangements of the investigator, who acts as liaison with the host of events and completes the process of completing travel allowance.
Write and revise, proofread and edit, examine and compile written material (correspondence, documents and / or special reports).
Assist with managing timeline and deliveries for grants and other time-sensitive activities
Order office supplies and help with inventory management if needed
Update the researcher’s CV regularly (publications, lectures, awards).
Assistance with liaison between the laboratory and various administrative offices
Perform various secretarial duties as required
Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience
Strong computer skills using standard office equipment. Must be very familiar with the Apple (Mac OS) system. Proficiency required in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as well as Adobe Acrobat and Photoshop.
Excellent communication, organizational, record and interpersonal skills
Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team
Remain in a normal sitting or standing position for long periods; reach and grab by extending hand (s) or arm (s); dexterity in manipulating objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; the ability to see and hear within normal parameters; the ability to move across the workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to a few pounds (such as a laptop or tablet).
